Arqit, Es'hailSat and AIEE Demonstrate Quantum-Safe Satellite Encryption in Qatar
Arqit, Qatar's Es'hailSat and systems integrator AIEE have demonstrated quantum-safe encryption on live satellite communications infrastructure in Doha, showing that post-quantum protection can be layered onto existing critical infrastructure networks without disrupting operations.

Qatar's national satellite operator has become one of the first in the region to test post-quantum encryption on live, operational infrastructure. Arqit Quantum, Es'hailSat and Advanced International Electronic Equipment Company (AIEE) announced the successful demonstration of quantum-safe security across satellite communications infrastructure already in commercial use, integrating Arqit's encryption technology into Es'hailSat's live environment at its 25.5/26° East hotspot and its Tier-4 certified Teleport facility in Doha.
The distinguishing feature of the test is that it ran on existing, in-service infrastructure rather than a purpose-built lab environment. Es'hailSat provided the operational satellite environment via its Es'hail-1 satellite, while AIEE led systems integration and interoperability testing across the ground and network infrastructure. The companies said the demonstration showed quantum-safe cryptographic protection can be introduced across satellite-connected networks without disrupting existing systems, services or operational performance, a distinction that matters for infrastructure operators who cannot take live networks offline to retrofit encryption.
"Satellite infrastructure supports some of the world's most operationally sensitive environments," said Arqit CEO Andy Leaver, adding that the project proves a practical path to strengthening cryptographic resilience without requiring operators to rebuild what they already run. Es'hailSat President and CEO Ali Al Kuwari framed the test in terms of the company's role in Qatar's broader digital transformation, noting the network's importance to "national infrastructure, economic development and secure digital transformation across the Middle East and North Africa region." AIEE Chief Technology Officer Adam St Paul said the approach lets satellite operators and critical infrastructure providers stay resilient against both state and non-state actors while maintaining the continuity their operations depend on.
The timing reflects a gap that has been narrowing faster than many infrastructure operators have accounted for. Quantum computers capable of breaking current public-key encryption are still understood to be years away, but the data protected by that encryption, particularly long-life communications and government and defence traffic, is often intended to stay confidential for decades. That creates a "harvest now, decrypt later" risk: adversaries can capture encrypted satellite traffic today and hold it until a capable quantum computer exists to break it. For infrastructure with a multi-decade operational lifespan, migrating to post-quantum cryptography is not a future problem so much as a current one with a delayed consequence.
For GCC enterprises and infrastructure operators more broadly, this test is a useful counterpoint to the more commonly discussed AI-driven security pressures dominating regional cyber planning this year, where frontier AI models finding exploitable vulnerabilities faster than human analysts are already putting financial infrastructure at risk years ahead of quantum threat timelines. Quantum readiness has tended to sit lower on GCC board agendas precisely because the threat timeline feels distant, but it is now showing up as a named board-level priority in its own right, not just a vendor talking point. Qatar's positioning here is consistent with a broader pattern: the country has been actively building out its cyber resilience credentials under its National Cyber Security Strategy, and was recently highlighted as an emerging regional leader on exactly this front.
The project establishes a foundation rather than a finished deployment. Arqit, Es'hailSat and AIEE describe the demonstration as supporting future quantum-safe satellite communications for enterprise, maritime, energy and critical infrastructure customers, but operators elsewhere in the region evaluating their own long-life communications infrastructure now have a concrete, live reference point rather than a purely theoretical one.
